Please be advised that, with effect from 3 August 2026, paper identity cards (Carta d’Identità Cartacea) will no longer be valid for international travel, irrespective of the expiry date shown on the reverse of the document.
Pursuant to Legislative Decree No. 108 of 26 June 2026, the following provisions apply:
- A valid paper identity card may continue to be used as a proof of identity when dealing with the Italian Public Administration and providers of public services, including Italian Consular Offices.
- In cases of urgency, Italian municipalities may issue a temporary identity document valid for international travel. Such a document is non-renewable and valid for a maximum period of six months. Please note that it may not be accepted by all foreign countries. Travellers are therefore advised to check the entry requirements of their destination before departure by consulting the Viaggiare Sicuri website.
Applications for the Electronic Identity Card (Carta d’Identità Elettronica – CIE) may be submitted in accordance with the procedures set out on the dedicated webpage of this Consulate General (click HERE).
Since 1 June 2026, Italian citizens registered with the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE) may also apply for a CIE at any Italian municipality, in accordance with Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026. Applicants are reminded to bring their Italian Tax Code (Codice Fiscale).
For Italian citizens 70 years of age or older, Electronic Identity Cards (CIEs) issued on or after 30 July 2026 are valid without an expiry date.
