Inequalities, Design for a better life’ and ‘Curiosity is Evolution’ were the themes addressed by Architect and Designer Michele De Lucchi, Testimonial of Italian Design Day 2025 in Hong Kong. Organised by the Consulate General of Italy, together with the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian Trade Commission and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the ninth edition of IDD in the city was held in collaboration with the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hong Kong Design Centre, which respectively hosted the two design talks by the renowned Italian architect and designer, the first one was aimed at students while the second one was aimed at professionals in the field of design. Architect De Lucchi focused on his humanist vision of design, which places human beings at the centre and aims to build identity while respecting diversity. He also illustrated, explaining it from different angles, the meaning of the term ‘Curiosity’ as the driving force of human evolution, from the discovery of natural phenomena to continuous innovation and the ability to be visionary, thanks to everyone’s natural inclination to ask questions and find answers that redefines the boundaries of knowledge constantly. As announced by Consul General Carmelo Ficarra, ‘Curiosity’ will also be the theme of the projects within the framework of the partnership between the Consulate General of Italy and Hong Kong Design Centre, in view of the events dedicated to design in 2025, up to the Business of Design Week scheduled in early December. The IDD programme was enriched by the display, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, of a Lamborghini Urus and Moleskine diaries created on specific designs by a group of students, as part of a collaboration between the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the well-known Italian brand. The third event of the IDD in Hong Kong was the opening of the exhibition ‘Produzione Privata’ by Architect De Lucchi at the Italian gallery Novalis Art Design, showcasing a series of design objects created without a commission with the aim of promoting craftsmanship and experimentation in the production of furnishing accessories.
