VOTE BY MAIL FOR ITALIAN CITIZENS WHO RESIDE ABROAD
In 2018 Italian citizens will vote for the renewal of the Italian Parliament (Chamber of Deputies and Senate of the Republic). Also the Italian citizens living abroad will vote to elect the Candidates representing the Foreign Constituency.
VOTING is a RIGHT protected by the Italian Constitution and, according to the Law n.459 of 27 December 2001, Italian citizens living abroad and officially registered in the electoral rolls of the Italian citizens living abroad, can VOTE BY MAIL.
For this reason, we invite you to update the Consulate in case your address has changed.
IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE THE OPTION TO VOTE IN PERSON IN ITALY (IN YOUR MUNICIPALITY), by writing to the Consulate before the end of December 2017. Voters who choose to vote in Italy will receive the notice card to vote at the polling station in Italy from their respective Municipalities. The Italian citizens living abroad who decide to vote in Italy will vote for the national Constituency and not for the Foreign Constituency.
The option to vote in Italy is applicable to one election only.
Voters who decide to vote in Italy must write to the Consulate before the 31st December of the year preceding the end of the legislature (31st March 2018) which is, in this case, the 31st December 2017.
In case of early dissolution of the Parliament, the option to vote in Italy can be sent by mail to the Consulate or brought to the Consulate in person not later than 10 days from the calling of the election.
To be considered valid, the communication to the Consulate must be written on white paper and contain the following elements: name, surname, date and place of birth and signature of the registered voter. It is also possible to use the sample form available at the Consulate or downloadable from the website of the Consulate.
Voters who are not delivering the document in person to the Consulate must attach a copy of the passport to their request sent by mail.
As specified by the regulation, it will be a responsibility of the voter to verify that the communication has duly reached the Consulate within the deadline.
The option to vote in Italy can be later REVOKED by written communication with the same method and deadline stated above.
If voters choose to vote in Italy, by Law there will be NO REIMBURSEMENT for the trip to Italy but only discounted tariffs within Italy. Only voters living in Countries where it is not possible to vote by mail (Art. 20, comma 1 bis, Law 459/2001) have the right to a reimbursement of 75 per cent of the travel ticket, in economy class.
