On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death, Italian journalist and writer Federico Rampini leads the seminar ‘Marco Polo 700 years after: his legacy in Italian and Western History. How an Italian merchant and traveller from Venice shaped the vision of China in his time and beyond‘ at the City University of Hong Kong. Organised by the Embassy of Italy in Beijing, the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing, the Consulate General and the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong, the event is part of the programme of the anniversary celebrations. During the seminar, Federico Rampini analysed the image of China over time, the importance of the original Silk Road and its economic and cultural impact on the Western world, as well as the narrative of China in Europe after Marco Polo’s journey and the revelation of a new world. Hong Kong is the first stop of a cycle of conferences dedicated to the historical figure of the Venetian explorer and Federico Rampini will continue his tour in Canton, Beijing and Shanghai in the coming days.
